Who’s Who in the Wild #22 – It’s Still Bear Season

Black bears are bulking up

Did you know that our resident black bears are still out and about, seeking out any high calorie food they can get their paws on? Fall is a critical time for bears as they try to pack on the pounds before they find a cozy place to hibernate for the winter.

Anarchist Mountain residents can do our part to ensure the bears can go about their search for food without getting into trouble by keeping all attractants (garbage, BBQs, bird seed, pet and livestock feed, compost) properly secured. Protein-based foods are a huge attractant, especially at this time of year, which means unsecured things like food waste, dirty BBQs, bird seed and pet food are a BIG problem.

The AMFRS Wildlife Safety Program works closely with the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen (RDOS) WildSafeBC program and the provincial Conservation Officer Service on our efforts to educate community residents about not only bear safety, but safety related to all our wild neighbours.

Interested in learning more about what you can do to keep our wildlife, families and pets safe? WildSafeBC has a wealth of information available: https://wildsafebc.com/
