Do Not Disturb — A Very Special Flower

by Shelley Patterson

Last year I wanted to write about the beautiful Indian Paintbrush that we have here on Anarchist Mountain. Somehow though, I missed the chance to photograph it before its brief season was over. This spring, however, I was ready and the mountain did not disappoint.

As these warmer days arrive and spring stretches across Anarchist Mountain, brilliant bursts of red and orange suddenly appear among the grasses and forest floor — Indian Paintbrush is so abundant but will vanish again almost as quickly as they came.

This year I also felt genuine relief seeing so many emerge near our home and build site. After the heavy yard work and disruption from establishing our property last year, I worried they may not return at all. Yet once again, the mountain showed its resilience and quiet ability to recover.

The Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja) is one of the most striking wildflowers found in British Columbia and plays an important role in our local ecosystem. These flowers help support pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds and are part of the delicate balance of flora and fauna that make the South Okanagan so unique.

Because of the sensitivity of many native species and habitats in this region, areas around Anarchist Mountain fall under important conservation protections through the BC Parks Anarchist Protected Area and broader ecological reserve policies in British Columbia. These protected areas help conserve rare and endangered plants, wildlife, and ecosystems for future generations.

When walking trails or open forest areas this spring, take care to avoid stepping on wildflowers and never pick them — especially species as sensitive and short-lived as the Indian Paintbrush. The best way to enjoy these natural bouquets is through photographs, quiet observation, and appreciation exactly where they grow.

Recently, I read an article discussing how birdwatching benefits neuroplasticity and mental well-being. I believe observing wildflowers and nature offers much the same gift. Learning what grows here on the mountain, noticing subtle seasonal changes, and discovering something new each walk brings a special kind of peace and connection.

As we all become busy with yard cleanup, planting, and FireSmart activities, keep an eye out for these resilient but vulnerable flowers. They are one more reminder that Anarchist Mountain remains wild, beautiful, and worth protecting.
